Rachel in Cambodia

Hi -

We are looking to launch some digital learning using Rachel, in Siem Reap Cambodia in early 2022.

Is anyone using Rachel in Cambodia and if so, what type of modules might you be using or have used. If anyone is using anything in Khmer, that would be helpful too.

Thanks, Roberta

Hi Roberta,

A team from Villanova deployed RACHEL in Cambodia recently with a Raspberry Pi. They developed a module with the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport that had their videos from their YouTube channel organized by class. Brandon ( @brandonks ) was the lead engineer on that project.

I’d be happy to put you in touch with them via email as well to see if the module is available.

@brandonks - Brandon, hoping you’ll get notified on this.

@RobertaT and @jamesk Thanks for connecting us! We are a still working on a solar powered version based on the raspberry pi 4 for 5 pilot schools in Cambodia. We are working with the Cambodian Ministry of Education Youth and Sport, the Liger academy, and the Cambodia Rural Education Support Organization for this project. Feel free to PM me! Would love to hear more about what you are doing in Cambodia.

As James mentioned, we developed a khmer module based off those videos. We wrote python scripts to download them and then translate the titles between english and khmer. We have a meeting with the Master teachers at the Cambodian’ Teacher Training Academy in Phnom Penh today about what content they like on RACHEL and what other things they want to see.

Thanks Brandon. Do you think it would be possible for us to host the khmer module on our servers for other users?

Hello,

Apologies for my delayed reply.
Thank you James for this useful information about what Villanova has deployed in Cambodia. It is very interesting.

Thanks Brandon for expanding further on what you are doing. I will follow up more with you both in a bit. Plus share what PeopleStories is doing.

I will write more over the next few days.

Roberta

@jamesk Would you be able to tell me how to PM within this platform? Thanks, Roberta

Hi @RobertaT - If you click the user’s name you should see a “message” button which brings up the private message dialog box.

It looks like this.

James

Thanks so much James!

You’re welcome Roberta!

@jamesk we definitely host the Cambodia module although it really needs a lot more work to put all the videos in an organized format. We want to organize it with conjunction with the Ministry of Education to follow their lesson planning.

Thanks @brandonks - If you’d ever like to host that on our servers please let me know. We’d love to make it available. Hope that project is going well.

@acedillo Do you think that the modules are ready to be uploaded to the RACHEL servers?

Hello Brandon, Roberta and James. I am on the board of a middle school ngo in Cambodia, near Kampot. Our school has very little internet, however we do have some computers and tablets that we have downloaded with information in Khmer and English. I am very interested in finding out how Rachel is working in your schools and which region you are in. I am in northern California. We would like to connect with other schools in Cambodia that use Rachel as resources.
Thank you

hi @Lydias57 - our lead worldwide trainer Romeo is in Cambodia now. Could we connect via email to get Romeo introduced to your school there? jeremy@worldpossible.org or romeo@worldpossible.org

Morning @Lydias57 and @jeremy . It’s been a while since I have been on the forum but my past group is still working on our work in Cambodia. In fact, we deployed our solar powered RACHEL devices earlier this year in Cambodia and Madagascar. We have plans to deploy more in Laos and revisit Cambodia to see how the devices are being used.

I would like to connect you to @acedillo who is leading our project team. I just act as an industry advisor. @jeremy as a side note, let me know if you want help with electronics/any battery development with RACHEL products.
